Top Ten Underdog Movies
So this week I have been talking a lot about bruises of all varieties and I think that there is nothing better than when you are beaten down and bruised up to remember that there is always the possibility for a happy ending and these movies all tell the stories of people who were bruised but didn't stay bruised for long.
10) Seabiscuit
This movie had a lot of underdogs, inbred horse, the physically challenged jockey and the Depression Era people of the US who needed inspiration. All culminating into a fantastic and inspiring real-life journey.
9) Star Wars: Episode IV
I am old, so when I was growing up with the first Star Wars movie was this one. My dad and brother are both sci-fi geeks and couldn't get enough of watching this, and despite the fact that I am not a sci-fi geek, I still get inspired every time Luke Skywalker in his little x-wing fighter defeats the massive Death Star. It's the ultimate David vs. Goliath story.
8) Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
In another great tale of David vs. Goliath the ragtag bunch from Average Joe's gym takes on the well-trained and well-funded group from Globo Gym in some intense dodgeball action. My favorite part of this movie has to be the constant references to ESPN 8 - The Ocho.
7) The Fighter
I could make a whole list of fighter movies that would include Rocky, The Wrestler and others, instead I thought I would pick one "down on his luck" fighter story, so I chose this one. I love the large, loud, Irish family in this real life story. They may have challenges, but nothing will stop them from supporting each other.
6) Crazy Heart
This is one of those movies that I was convinced I did not want to see, and then it played on my flight to San Francisco and I fell in love with it. I love this story of success, failure and redemption. Plus, it has a killer soundtrack.
5) Hunger Games
Katniss Everdeen from District 13 was certainly not supposed to survive her first Hunger Games, yet the odds proved to definitely be in her favor.
4) Miracle
The greatest stories are those based on real life events and even though I know how this movie ends, every time I watch it, I still get excited when the US plays the Russians in the semi-final game.
3) Rudy
I just love the story of this scrappy blue collared guy who works hard and trains hard for the opportunity to play on his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team.
2) Shawshank Redemption
Way before there was Orange is the New Black (which I am currently obsessed with), there was the prison drama of Shawshank Redemption which told the story of the friendship of two prisoners over time. The last scene of this movie always makes me smile.
1) Apollo 13
The first time I saw this movie, I was blown away by everything the team from NASA had to do on the ground to bring home the wrecked Apollo 13 spacecraft. What is even crazier, though, is that there was apparently more things that went wrong; however, director Ron Howard didn't think that people would believe it if they included it in the movie, so they left out some other facts about this successful disaster.Image Source: Free Digital Photos.net Digitalart
