FB Hubby's Top Ten DIY Movies

Hi everybody! Well, it is Friday and I know you will be all happy to have Shannon back next week. So this, and a Foodie Friday, will be FB Hubby's last posts. On Monday, I focused on how doing it yourself can save lots of money and on Wednesday, I shared some of my favorite YouTube videos to help with those DIY projects. Today I would like to share my Top Ten DIY Movies. These are films that, in my mind, have that DIY flavor.

Flight of the Phoenix (the 1965 version)

Nothing says DIY than building a new plane out of a crashed plane. The 1965 version had a great cast and was really well done for the time. You really root for these guys to get this plane to work. The remake was terrible. I didn't really care if that bunch made it out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IACjOvyx5hs

The Secret of My Success

Not all DIY is limited to physical construction and repairs, some is about life. In this movie, Brantley/Carlton (Michael J. Fox) wants to become an executive, but he starts out in the mail room. However, through his own hard work and perseverance, he becomes a success.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZleF0lAajY8

Working Girl

OK, Shannon would not allow me to do The Secret of My Success, about a guy who makes something of himself, without paying tribute to the female version. I do also enjoy this movie as much for the story of how a woman, Tess (Melanie Griffith), through her own hard work and ideas, can become a success, as for the awesome 80's hair.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkR7ITaa2ko

Wreck-It Ralph

One of the great things about having our son, is that he is a great excuse to watch animated films. I loved this one about a video game character, Wreck-It Ralph, who wanted to be something more than someone who destroyed things. Though he is the "bad guy" and Fit-it Felix is the "good guy" who repairs everything Ralph wrecks, Ralph shows how anyone can make changes in themselves.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87E6N7ToCxs

Money Pit

I love this movie. Walter (Tom Hanks) does try to DIY this house at first, but realizes that it is way beyond his meager talents. I always encourage people to start with small projects to gain confidence in taking on larger projects. However this house was just one massive project. I love the part about the kitchen being done. Walter's laugh is as hard as I laugh during this movie.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CJ9EDtZ2p8

Mr Mom

I have always loved this movie, especially now that I have a son. One of the great things is how differently Caroline (Teri Garr) and Jack (Michael Keaton) wake up the kids. She does it nice and sweet, much like Shannon will wake up our son, he does it loud and obnoxious, much like I do. Jack does quite a bit of DIY, both to his home and to himself.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La8yBDhj34c

Apollo 13

Talk about DIY under pressure. The funny thing is that in an interview with the makers of this movie, they did not show everything that actually went wrong because they felt the audience would not believe it. Still, it is amazing to watch what these guys had to do with limited resources.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2YZnTL596Q

The Notebook

OK, so this is a major Chick Flick, but let's face it, Noah (Ryan Gosling) does build the house of Allie's (Rachel McAdams) dreams, and he does it all himself. That is a big DIY and it does get him the girl.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gJhdFingbQ

October Sky

A lot of people don't know this film, but it is really amazing. It is based on a true story of a kid in 1957 named Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his friends whose only future lies in the coal mines. However, when Russia launched Sputnik, it inspires these kids to build their own rockets. It is really an inspiring DIY movie that everyone should show their kids.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZezvNWgi4M

Life as a House

Ok, I may lose my Men's Club card over this, but I can't even think about this movie without tearing up. George (Kevin Kline) wants to build a house and he wants his estranged son, Sam (Hayden Christensen) to help. The thing is, George is dying. Together, and with the help of others, more than just a house is built. This movie says DIY in a million ways. Warning: You will cry!!!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ed7UCXEQXsWhat's your favorite DIY movie? Did it inspire you to do your own project or want to call in an "expert"?
