Vacation

All I ever wanted

Vacation

Had to get away

The song Vacation by the Go Gos has been playing on repeat in my head for about three weeks now. This summer I didn’t plan a formal vacation because I knew I would be busy with the launch of my new company, The Financial Gym; however, after working tirelessly on the company launch, with my current clients and new clients, on this blog and on the podcast, I feel like a vacation is all I want.

Working 24-7 not 9-5

My good friend John recently asked the question about the end of the 9 to 5 job and wondered about why people fantasize about the entrepreneurial lifestyle so much. As I commented on John’s site, my guess is that most people who fantasize or glamorize the entrepreneurial lifestyle are not actually entrepreneurs. Don’t get me wrong, there are so many wonderful benefits to being an entrepreneur, and a flexible work schedule is one of them. However, a big drawback of the lifestyle is that rather than working 9-5, you work 24-7.I know people say all the time that you can eventually get your business to the point where you work 4-day work weeks or take more time off, but I truly can never imagine getting to that point unless I was completely retired. What entrepreneur starts a company and then feels comfortable when it plateaus? It seems counterintuitive to the entrepreneurial spirit. I can’t imagine ever taking my foot off the gas where it comes to my company because I think there will always be room for growth and improvement. As a result of my drive to create a successful business, for the past two years, I typically work seven days a week and have a very difficult time shutting down completely from what I do. I have the #FOMO version of an entrepreneur where I feel if I shut myself off, I will miss an important business opportunity that is critical for my growth. Most days I don’t even think about the fact that I work seven days a week because I’m working on something I’m passionate about and it’s true that when your work becomes your passion your work ceases to be work. I really enjoy everything that I do, but there do come times where the seven days and intense schedules start to wear on me. A few weeks ago, I started to feel the weight of my crazy schedule and decided that a vacation was in store for me.vacation1

My Staycation/Workcation

What kind of vacation am I taking? I’m mostly taking a staycation/workcation. Over the next two weeks, I plan to unplug from a few areas of my work and slow down a little bit. Therefore, the next two weeks I will not have new content on this blog or on my podcast. As I even write these words I feel the #FOMO creeping in, but equally as strong is the desire to take a break, so I know I’m making the right decision. With the space that the workcation is going to create, I plan to indulge in activities that will refuel my mind and soul. I plan to read some books that I haven’t focused on in a while. I plan to watch a marathon of girly movies like Pride and Prejudice (the BBC version), Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Dirty Dancing, Grease 2 and Pretty Woman. I plan to sleep as late as my body will let me and work out as much as possible. I’m not going far from my home, and I’m looking forward to it.If you are feeling rundown like I am, don’t be afraid to take a vacation. Remember that it doesn’t have to be a vacation in the truest sense of the word; it could be a staycation or a workcation. Take a break from whatever it is that is bringing stress in your life and let the pause that you take give you the energy to move forward. I’m looking forward to this vacation and I plan to return full of energy and drive as we head into September. See you in a few weeks!Gif Source: Giphy
