Investing Asset Classes

As I mentioned last week, I started a new investing series on my podcast to help beginner investors feel more comfortable with investing. My goal for this series is for a beginner investor to listen to it from start to finish and feel really comfortable investing on their own. I'm excited that the founders of my new podcast sponsor, DIY Fund, Wendy and Eric agreed to join me for this series. As a former financial advisor, I hate to see people waste money paying an advisor to invest for them when all they really need are some tools and education. DIY Fund is a great free resource for the tools and this series will provide the education.

Assets Explained

In this episode we are talking assets. To some people, this may seem really basic, but I can't tell you how many client meetings I've had where clients ask for an explanation on the assets. People in the personal finance business take for granted that not everyone knows that stocks and equities mean the same thing or what a bond is and why it should matter when you invest.A big part of investing is understanding your asset allocation; however, if you don't understand the core component of asset allocation, your assets, then you will be really lost. If you have an understanding of what the assets are and how they impact your investment results, then figuring out your allocation will make a lot more sense.

Asset Types Discussed:

  1. Stocks/Equities

  2. Bonds/Fixed Income

  3. Preferred Stock

  4. Commodities

  5. Real Estate

  6. Alternative Investments

  7. Cash

Next week's podcast will dive into asset allocation and we will start to put these pieces together but I hope that this episode helps anyone who has ever been confused while watching CNBC or listening to other people talk about investing.I hope you will also check out DIY Fund and see what great resources they have to help you invest on your own.

Do you know what assets you're invested in? Do you invest in non-core assets like commodities, real estate and alternatives?
