Top Ten Free or Cheap Summer Ideas
Happy 4th!!
I know that summer began a few weeks ago, but for me, summer always seems to officially start on July 4th. Maybe it's because of the fireworks, or maybe because that is the time the water starts to warm up in the New York area, but for whatever the reason, I think of July 4th as the "official" beginning of summer. So in honor of the holiday, I thought that I would share with you my top ten free or cheap summer ideas for you and your family.
Free or Cheap Summer Ideas
10) Camping - I have to be honest, I have never gone camping, but it is definitely on my bucket list, especially since the cost of a night out is MUCH cheaper than a hotel, even after investing in a tent. Reserve America is a great resource for finding campground locations.9) Drive-In Movies - I remember going to a drive-in movie when I was younger, and it was such a fun experience. The great thing about going today is that you save a TON of money on snacks and drinks at the theater because you can just bring it in your car. If you are looking for one near you, here is a great resource.8) Museums - We won't always have the luxury of enjoying a beautiful summer day outside, so when the weather is yucky, you should head into a museum and enjoy all that they have to offer. I wrote about a number of free or inexpensive ones that you should check out.7) Free Concerts or Movies in the Park - I have lived in four cities since graduating from college and they all offered free concerts or movies in the park, and I took advantage of those in each city. It's fun to sit on a blanket with some snacks and drinks and enjoy the entertainment.6) Farmer's Markets - One of my favorite things about summer are the farmer's markets that always seem to pop up around town. I love supporting local farmers, but I enjoy their fresh produce that is perfect for summer salads even more.5) DIY Projects - The nice thing about the summertime is that you gain extra space around your home because you can utilize your outside areas more and DIY Projects can be completed easier.4) Picnics - I don't know about you, but my son loves the idea of eating outside and actually I love the idea of eating outside because it requires less cleanup. We like to eat out in our local town park and usually bring a soccer ball or frisbee for throwing around.3) Explore National Parks - One of my dad's bucket list items is to hit as many national parks as he can, and I think it is a great goal. Ken Burn's directed an amazing documentary on our national parks and I encourage you to watch it and motivate yourself to check out one near you.2) Grilling - One of the best things about summer is the opportunity to use yours or your friend's grill to make your meals. The best thing about grilling is that the meals are really inexpensive and simple to make as long as you are handy around a grill. I use Pinterest for finding great recipes to grill.1) Beach / Pool or Lake - If you live near a body of water, you should enjoy it this summer season. We have a community pool that we take advantage of as much as possible. Most public beaches or pools are extremely affordable for the entire family for the day. The only expense, if you are like me, will be sunscreen.Image Source: Free Digital Photos.net Africa
