Financial Freedom with Elle from Simplify & Enjoy

As many of you know, I have a number of things on my plate, I wear a lot of hats. From running The Financial Gym, to working with my own clients, to working on this podcast. There are many days I think I need to cut back on podcasting. But on days like today, I am so thankful for this platform and opportunity to share someone and a resource that I feel is truly beneficial and can help you live a better life. Joining me today is Elle Martinez. Elle was previously on the show to discuss her podcast and website, Couple Money. And she joins me today to share why she created a new podcast and website, Simplify & Enjoy and the unique approach she’s taking to the FI movement. I always love catching up with Elle, especially because she makes her own alcohol.

Podcast Notes

  • Elle has been in the personal finance space for years. She started with her blog and moved into podcasting. The inspiration for her blog came from the awkward money conversation she had with her husband when they first got engaged. This conversation came as a surprise to her because, up until then, things had been simple for them.

  • They were broke college kids when they first met and while they dated. Most of their finances felt low-key and inexpensive; she didn’t realize how much there was to talk about. The conversation was eye-opening; on paper, their approach to finances was different.

  • Shannon was not surprised to hear this conversation was awkward. Most people are more comfortable getting physically naked in front of someone than they would financially. Combining finances is one of the most uncomfortable subjects for most.

  • They did 350 episodes of Couple Money, focusing on couples and their money. How we handle our finances is a reflection of our priorities and values. One of the critical things partners need to have right after love for each other is respect.

  • The most successful couples have regular money dates. Having a consistent time to chat about this takes the sting away. Start with your goals, not the numbers.

  • Be curious and open with your partner. Find out what’s really important to them, the non-negotiables, and don’t judge them.

  • Goals are the destination on the road trip. Finding common goals makes getting on the same page financially easier because you know what you’re working for and doing it together.

Simplify & Enjoy Podcast

  • After 350 episodes of Couple Money and writing about finance since 2009, Elle wanted to branch out. Simplify & Enjoy is a look at financial freedom through the lens of enjoying the process and the journey.

  • There’s a "more, more, more”" mentality in the online personal finance space. The relentless pursuit of chasing numbers as fast as possible. What’s the point of it all? The last three years have shown Elle enjoying the journey while you’re on it is the important thing.

  • Money is a tool; it gives you freedom and options. Financial freedom is about getting your time back. It’s not just the numbers. Think about who is important to you. What is your "why”? What brings you joy?

  • Some people have big goals with high prices, whereas others want to take their foot off the gas.

  • There are different seasons of life. Your finances will flow with that. There are no shortcuts; these things take time. Make sure your life reflects your values.

  • The next season of Simplify & Enjoy is looking at health and wealth. You can listen to Simplify & Enjoy plus Couple Money anywhere you listen to podcasts.

  • Listen to Elle’s other’s Martinis and Your Money Appearances

Takeaway: My biggest takeaway is the importance of making your financial goals personal to you. Your journey to financial independence does not have to happen at any predetermined pace. It happens in the way that is most authentic to you and your family.
