Fitness & Community with Jacey Lambros & Danielle DeAngelo of Jane Do

This month begins a three month long effort for me and The Financial Gym team to connect again in person with our community. In partnership with Community Spirit Vodka, we’ll be touring 9 cities and bringing our community together for the first time in almost three years. It’s an exciting time for us and I wanted to spend this month on the podcast talking about community and its importance. Today I’m talking to Jacey Lambros and Danielle DeAngelo, co-founders of the company Jane Do who set out to build a community of empowered women, faced extreme headwinds to their business during the pandemic, but persevered and continue to focus on their important mission. They join me to share what keeps them motivated and where the company is going to go in this next chapter.

What are we drinking?

Jacey - Tequila on the rocks

Danielle - Dirty Gin Martini with Hendricks

Shannon - Gin and Tonic

Podcast Notes

  • Jacey and Danielle were performers with The Radio City Rockettes. Jane Do was born from their passion for dance and love of fitness. They wanted to create something bigger than the physical space, the largest community of the most powerful women.

  • In 2014 when they started, their space was called The Sports Barre (they wanted to leverage the fitness wave happening at the time). Each was able to invest $20k into the project.

  • One year from the date of opening, they changed their name to Jane Do. They currently have four studios standing and relaunched their digital program. They’ve had to close studios during the last few years. It was a tough decision, but there was power in the community they built and kept digitally.

  • While the pandemic has been tough, there were some gifts. The idea of virtual communities has become more normal and people are active in them. The timing worked out for them because they’d been preparing to launch their app and it was ready the day they had to close the brick and mortar.

  • The digital platform gave the Janes a voice. In a traditional class, folks don’t always have time to connect. With the chat feature, the virtual classes allow folks to communicate with each other and the instructor more. They learned so much about their clients.

  • Classes can be live streamed through a web browser or the app, and there are on-demand options. They range from 10-minute workouts to full classes, so the experience can be customized.

  • The cameras only work one way for the classes, so you can dance like nobody's watching. Because nobody is!

  • The most important thing is that the workouts are fun. If you’re not having fun, you won’t continue to do it. With fitness, consistency and a supportive community are key.

  • In addition to physical fitness, Jane Do aims to support its clients in other areas as well, including financial, sexual, and emotional health.

  • Right now they offer talk-backs with professionals in those fields and foster conversations about taboo topics.

  • The Janes make the community special. They’re all unique and interesting in their own ways.

  • While there’s nothing quite like an in-person experience, people’s habits and behaviors have shifted over the last few years.

  • Immersing yourself in a community allows you to step out of your comfort zone. We all need support through tough days.

  • If you want to visit a Jane Do location they are in Jersey City, Hoboken, and Charleston, South Carolina. If you want to join the virtual community, there are many ways to get involved!

Takeaway: My biggest takeaway is that during really dark times, sometimes all you have is your community to keep you pushing forward. I know that’s the case for me with Financial Gym as well as Jacey and Danielle with Jane Do.

My biggest goal for The Financial Gym right now is to grow our Certified Financial Trainer Licensing Program. This program is built off of over 10 years of working with tens of thousands of people getting them financially healthy. My goal is that every financial advisor, planner or coach has our certification. Our approach to financial wellness is revolutionary and it’s important for me and my team that anyone who plans to work with people around their finances understands the important lessons we’ve learned along the way. I always say the problems are the same, the zeros are different. If you’re a personal finance nerd with a passion for helping others, this is the course for you. If you’re a financial professional helping others, this is the course for you. If you’re working with a financial professional, you should insist that they get this designation so that they can become more holistic in their financial planning. So head over or send friends to financialgym.com and under our services, you’ll find more on the certification program.
